Top Ten Comedies of 2007

2007 supplied moviegoers with a wonderful selection of comedies to feast our eyes and ears on. Although there were a few duds in the bunch, several releases more than made up for those run of the mill snooze-fests.

1. The Simpsons Movie – all I can say is finally! This brilliant feature-length adventure marks 20 years of non-stop laughs by America’s favorite Springfield family.

2. Futurama: Bender’s Big Score – anyone who’s a fan of the mastermind behind the Simpsons (Matt Groening) will love this quirky film based on the popular television series set in the year 3000.

3. The Wendell Baker Story – a totally unexpected surprise written by and starring Luke Wilson, this character-driven charmer is definitely worth a rent. If you’re also a fan of Owen Wilson, he has a supporting role.

4. Knocked Up – The second laugh-out-loud masterpiece from Judd Apatow that produces a perfect comedic balance of raunchy & heart. Side note: don’t listen to Katherine Heigl; yes the first part of this film is quite immature but once the father-to-be steps up to the plate it’s very sweet.

5. Superbad – produced by Judd Apatow and written by Seth Rogen (of the aforementioned as well as The 40-Year-Old-Virgin), this unrated feature is a must-see for anyone who appreciates a crude but humorous high school underdog story.

6. The Brothers Solomon – following with the trend of baby movies, Will Arnett and Will Forte star as two well-intentioned socially inept ‘bros looking for the perfect mates to provide their dying father with a grandchild. Although the premise sounds bizarre, I was laughing all the way through.

7. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and LarryAdam Sandler and Kevin James macerating as domestic partners in order to sidestep life-insurance policies? Hilarious!

8. Evan Almighty – is there anything Steve Carell can’t do? It’s rare for a sequel to outshine the original, but this one pulled it off.

9. License to Wed – although it’s a bit over-the-top, watching Robin Williams play a crazy priest is totally entertaining. Plus John Krasinski (Jim from The Office) is such a cutie.

10. You Kill MeBen Kingsley plays an alcoholic mob hitman who begins to work at a mortuary after completing a 12-step program. The plot thickens as he falls for a beautiful co-worker, played by Tea Leoni! This comical blockbuster also stars Luke Wilson.
