Finally, E! has done what’s seriously been long overdue: the network canned The Simple Life starring celebrity socialites Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, who are more famous for their real-life legal dramas and shenanigans than anything they’ve ever done for reality television.
E! made the announcement yesterday that the series’ current season, The Simple Life Goes to Camp (yawn!) will be its last (yay!). And what’s to blame for the series’ ultimate downfall? Why, the overexposure of Hilton’s and Richie’s real lives, of course: Hilton’s 23-day romp in the slammer; Richie getting knocked up by Joel Madden and then arrested and sentenced herself, just to name a few incidents.
According to Us Weekly, the E! network says the actual “drama of their lives overshadowed anything happening on the show.” Duh. Who cares about Paris and Nicole playing with kids at camp when they’re traipsing in and out of jail in real life?
Perhaps the only way E! could have realistically kept the show going was change the angle (and series title) to The Simple Jail Life: What the Slammer is Really Like for Celebrities. Or maybe someone could forget the been-there, done-that Paris/Richie pair and instead sign up Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan for a new run, called The Self-Destructive Life: How to Lose Your Career Yet Still Remain Famous.
Now those shows, we might watch.
