Annie Says: Jordan Launches a Perfume, or: Yawn of the Week

Its not a new idea. Audrey Hepburn had a perfume on the cosmetic counters half a century ago, and Elizabeth Taylor’s “White Diamonds” launched in 1991 and became a huge success. So why in a period of 50 years can’t celebrities come up with something a little more original?

But now we have Celine Dion, Beyonce, Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Sarah Jessica Parker and not forgetting Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Pleasures Delight” which sounds more like something on offer in a Thai massage parlour than a perfume, all offering us the chance to smell like, well whatever the celebrities think we should smell like.

Now we hear Jordan, AKA, Katie Price, has jumped on the perfume bandwagon. Once known as a ‘glamour model’, (and we all know what that’s a euphemism for!) for having voluptuous la-la’s and appearing in the more sleazy British tabloids, Jordan has now snuck her way into the world of celebrity with her appearance on reality TV, book writing and now yet another celebrity named perfume, “Stunning.”

Now don’t get me wrong, I haven’t smelt it yet but “Stunning!” 250,000 volts is stunning, a punch in the face is “stunning,” a taser gun is “stunning,” but a perfume! Na, I don’t see it!

As if running the gauntlet through any department store wasn’t difficult enough, with over realist sales assistants charging at us with atomizer sprays as if bringing down a swarm of locust, we have yet another atomizer to dodge this Christmas.

There was a time when celebrities were known for their talent: Vivien Leigh - acting, Pele - football, Ginger Rogers - dancing, and Judy Garland -singing, but nowadays we’re hard pushed to state exactly what a celebrity really is known for.

With so many strings to their bows they’re bound to get recognition for one thing or another eventually.

But in recent years, it seems that every celebrity in the known world has released either a line of lingerie, clothing, cosmetics or perfume. And what is worse, is we all buy the stuff believing the hype. Even a celebrity like Paris Hilton, who is famous only for her family’s money, DUI and a sex video, and who has become nothing more than a laughing stock over the past year, still manages to command an audience for her weak, wishy-washy pong in a bottle.
