The ‘actor’s actor’ husband of Joanne Woodward and Oscar winning icon, Paul Newman has died at the age of 83 at his farmhouse in Westport, Connecticut.
Newman had been battling lung cancer for several months and had in the main managed to keep his illness out of the public eye, remaining active at race car meetings and running his food empire.
During his acting career Paul was nominated for an Academy Award no fewer than 6 times before he managed to secure the gold ware for his role in The Colour of Money in 1986.
Newman’s striking blue eyes and chiseled good looks made him a favourite over the years with the ladies but for most of his life there remained only one leading lady, his wife of 50 years, Joanne Woodward.
The film star also founded his Newman’s Own line of salad dressings, pasta sauces and salsa in 1982, when almost as a joke, he and a group of friends came up with the idea.
Also known as a philanthropist, Newman gave the profits from the business to charities, including his Hole in the Wall Gang summer camps for children.
In an interview in 1998 Newman said, “We don’t take ourselves very seriously as business people, but considering this was something that started off as a joke in 1982, we have had a lot of fun giving away, I think it’s 90 million bucks, to various charities.”
Paul’s other passion in life was his racing career. At the age of 70, he became the oldest driver to be part of a winning team in a major sanctioned race, the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1995.
