Nicolas Cage woke up in the middle of the night to a find something shocking. It wasn’t that he shared an ex-wife with Michael Jackson, nor was it the fact that his last film tanked at the box office.

He had a confrontation with an uninvited house guest - or as they’re known in Hollywood, a stalker. The intruder was sporting one of the star’s leather jackets, police reported.

Forty five year old Robert Dennis Furo was charged with burglary early Monday morning after busting into the Faceoff star’s New Port Beach home.

Nick handled the situation like a pro and escorted the man off the premises calmly before calling the authorities.

Cage and wife Alice Kim were not present at the time of the break in, but later that night - around 2 a.m. - Cage woke up to find the stranger standing in the doorway of his bathroom. According to D.A. spokeswoman Farrah Emami, Cage “escorted Furo outside without incident and called police.”

Newport Beach Police Lt. Craig Fox added, “He handled it very calmly.”

Though no word has come on what the man was doing there or how he got in in the first place Furo did plead “not guilty” at the California Courthouse yesterday and the judge has set his bail at $100,000.

This isn’t the first time a celebrity fan has gotten too close for comfort. After viewing the movie Taxi Driver Jodie Foster’s stalker John Hinkley became obsessed with the young actress. When Foster went on to Yale, Hinkley moved to New Haven to be close to her.

After failing to become close to Foster he decided to kill himself in front of her or hi-jack a plane. He wound up trying to assassinate Ronald Regan as his own personal homage to the plot of the film.

David Letterman’s “admirer” Margaret Ray repeatedly stalked the talk show host at his Connecticut home and was sentenced to 14 months in jail before killing herself a short time later.

Catherine Zeta Jones received death threats, a man believed he was Sheryl Crow’s spiritual twin, while Gwyneth Paltrow had to have her pizza delivery guy committed.

Poor Pamela Anderson actually had a crazed fan showing up at her son’s school, attempting to gain any sort of attention from the Baywatch babe / mother of two.

Steven Spielberg had the pleasure of dealing with a woman in a satanic cult who was convinced that his family was attempting to plant a microchip “soul catcher” in her brain.

It seems that Nic Cage narrowly escaped a much more serious situation.

Though, he may want to look into a better security system.
