Once again the dynamic and unstoppable duo of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have teamed up in the big screen production of every child’s favourite book of escapism, Alice In Wonderland.
And, as we have come to expect from Depp, he’s had his otherwise handsome face plastered in extreme vivid colours as he takes on the role of, who other than, the Mad Hatter?

After all, what more would we expect from Depp who has thrilled us in the past with his acting skills as the mad pirate Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka or the killer barber named Sweeney Todd?

With the exceptionally artistic use of special effects the look of the film is typical Burton style with Victorian styling and extreme colour contrasts and along with their outrageous costumes the cast, which features Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Alan Rickman have all had their features digitally altered, making them look far removed from their normal selves.

As the tea-drinking, unbirthday-celebrating Mad Hatter, 46 year old Johnny’s eyes are yellow and enlarged making him almost unrecognizable with his curly orange hair, pasty skin and pink make-up. Starring along side Depp is Matt Lucas of Little Britain fame who is seen pumped up to bursting point as the characters of the rhyming twins Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.

Luckily for the relatively unknown Mia Wasikowska, 19, who hails from Australia, Burton has chosen her to fill the role of Alice, who is much older in the film than in CS Carroll’s classic, which also has an interesting and varied opening to the tale of the bored child who follows White Rabbit, played by Michael Sheen, last seen as David Frost in Frost/Nixon, down a rabbit hole and into Wonderland.

While film fans will have to wait until March 2010 to see the film, Disney have given them a taste of things to come with the first official glimpse of the cast in their garish costumes.
