The long awaited Changeling opened in movie theaters yesterday, Halloween, and Angelina Jolie could well have been starring in the Thriller video in celebration of October 31st with her dead pan whiten flesh and dark circled eyes that were originally aimed at giving the effect of a mother down trodden by the disappearance of her young son and the L A P D’s reluctance to search for him.It’s a movie of two halves. With Jolie screaming and screeching her way through the first half as she battles against a corrupt police force in the 1920’s, with the second half seeing the audience screaming and screeching (internally) as they cheer her on in her fight against LA’s finest. With the help of radio preacher, Gustav Briegleb played by John Malkovich, we finally see her single handedly bringing down the LAPD of the 1920’s.
Gone Baby Gone star Amy Ryan, although giving only a supporting role to the movie as a prostitute inmate at the psychiatric ward to which Jolie’s Christine Collins is submitted, brings some life to a rather flat script.
For the most part, despite the Oscar winning direction of Clint Eastwood and a story line which, although gripping could well have been expanded upon, it’s hard to see past the very high profile and public persona of Jolie. No matter how dowdy and unattractive she’s made to look, she’s still Brad Pitt’s bedmate, mother of 6 children and constant fodder for the media.
