As celebrities packed up their precious belongings and flocked to the Four Seasons Hotel to escape raging wildfires, television shows had production disrupted.
“All I see is smoke,” Kelsey Grammer, who was evacuated from his Malibu home, tells E! Online, “but we’re okay. We’re safe. We got the dog, we got the kids.”
The actor says his daughter was near hysteria when the family was forced to flee: “She woke up: ‘Daddy, what’s the matter?’” he says. “I said, ‘Oh honey, it’s nothing. Just relax. Come on, we’re going to have some fun.’ So she shined the flashlight around and we got out. It was fine.”
Also evacuated from their Malibu homes: Mel Gibson and his family, and Victoria Principal, who left with only her pets and some photos.
Filming on the set of Kiefer Sutherland’s 24 was halted because of health concerns of smoke wafting on set.
The TV show Big Shots was forced to cancel a cycling sequence scheduled to shoot Tuesday in Malibu, and The Riches had to rewrite a scene involving the use of real-life sheriff’s deputies, who were unavailable to participate.
Uber trendy sushi restaurant, Nobu in Malibu, has been closed to the public since Sunday, but will start serving meals to firefighters, TMZ.com reports. Music mogul David Geffen opened his Malibu Inn to rescue workers and displaced impoverished families.
Richard Gere and John Travolta got an aerial view of the coastal fires as they flew into Los Angeles on Monday for the 11th annual Hollywood Awards. “It’s as far as you could see in both directions,” Gere told Access Hollywood. “The smoke was actually in the plane as we flew through.” Added Travolta: “It was a large area, surprisingly large. I mean I never like to see that.”
More than half a million people have been forced to evacuate so far. The Governator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has declared a state of emergency.

Being a UK citizen I’m not totally clued up on Schwarzenegger’s policies but it seems from what I’ve heard that he’s doing a good job.
It was good to see him spearheading enviromental issues with Tony Blair this year.
However, as an outsider to US politics it can sometimes be hard to take him seriously.
I recently switched channels and saw footage of Schwarzenegger in a helicopter surveying the fires with a Fire-Chief.
I jumped to the conclusion that this was a Schwarzenegger film I hadn’t seen and expected him to parachute out and begin putting the fires out himself.
I felt embarrassed when I discovered this was actual news footage.
